The Origin Story

100% authentic, no matter what

True Individual's goal to make fun and expressive casualwear for adults, kids, and maybe even aliens someday, has never wavered. As the founder, I believe that there's no reason to compromise on quality. That's one of the reasons why I'm not a fan of fast-fashion. It's wasteful, usually involves cheap quality, and negatively impacts the environment. We avoid that here by using natural textile materials that are meant to last. And we use the best quality print method for the cleanest look.

But it's more than just the looks. It's about trying to do something bigger than ourselves. I truly believe it's integral to create a community of people who can express being their greatest selves, but most importantly, encourage everyone to be comfortable in who they are, as well as spread the positivity this world needs.

Ky'l McClanahan (Founder)

My first and main objective has always been to create an aesthetic reminiscent of our more playful era, back when we were younger. I figured that since many things in life lack that essence, I could at least create clothing that would keep it. We tend to notice that essence deplete around us as we get older.

You grow up and suddenly everything gets so serious. Life gets more stressful and things that should be simple are anything but. The world gets caught up in what feels like an incessant stream of noises that distract you left and right, leaving you feeling like you have little room left to be the dream version of yourself. So my goal was to produce apparel that would balance representing that 'grown-up kid' sentiment with themes that would resonate with folks young and old.

When I first had the idea for True Individual, I wanted to do more than just make "cute clothing". I wanted to find a way to give each design a meaning, a story. Two things we all have. That was easier said than done. I had to scrap a lot of designs, rewrite a lot of my ideas, question whether or not I could actually do this, but ultimately what came out of it was a mini blueprint for beautiful growth.

That's when I created the 12 Pillars. 12 core traits—Authenticity, Kindness, Honesty, Courage, Self-Love, Respect, Loyalty, Empathy, Creativity, Determination, Perseverance, and Patience—that, when worked on altogether, can drastically shape one's character into the best it can be. My goal was, is, and always will be to help others pursue that. I want to teach and inspire people to learn about and look within themselves, to see where they fall on the True Individual spectrum and maximize their "stats". I even incorporate those traits as themes for my designs.

So whatever point you're at in life, whether you're working on yourself, on others, or both, whatever it is, as long as you're happy and out there being a true individual, that's all that matters.
